Donut Envy Equals Sweet Freedom!

This weekend was one of the most relaxing ones I have had in a long time– the husband and I stayed in Friday night, we went out for dinner with some awesome new and old friends at Jacky’s Waterplace, where I indulged in the same nime chow and bok choy I ordered the first time I went there, and I went on a shopping excursion to buy some cardigans from Urban Outfitters and also to pre-order these new Toms ballet flats!

I should be receiving this babies in about two weeks!  So excited!

Last night, I skipped the Superbowl and just took it easy.

I think the biggest highlight of the weekend, though was a package I received in the mail. . .  keep reading and it will all make sense. . . . !

Now, I’ll admit it– I have donut envy.  I don’t own a donut pan, nor do I have the motivation to go out and get one so I can make my own delicious gluten-free vegan donuts.  Many of my favorite bloggers taunt me with their stunning donut creations (I am looking at you Lori, Michelle and Ashley!), and honestly, I often want to put my hand through the computer screen and pluck a freshly-baked, sweet-smelling donut right out of their donut recipe blog posts so I can devour them in lightning speed.  I have a donut craving so intense, so extreme, that I needed to do something about it.

A little under two years ago I would say, I was visiting my sister-in-law at college in Philadelphia, and I forced her and my husband to accompany to the one place I think of when I think Philly (and it is not the Rocky steps!).  I made them drive me to a little pastry shop called Sweet Freedom Bakery.

I think I originally found out about this allergy-friendly, vegan and gluten-free bakery from a blog (not sure which one!), and I knew I had to track it down when given the opportunity.  We found it, and proceeded to order as many items from their bakery case as possible, both for immediate consumption and to take back to Rhode Island.  My husband and sister-in-law were quite impressed with how indulgent and delicious their items were, and I just recall drooling a whole bunch!

I managed to get on their email list, so every once in a while, I would get messages from them detailing what’s new for the bakery.  I recently received an email which brought to my attention that Sweet Freedom ships their products nationally!  I remember checking out their site before, and it seemed they only did that locally, so imagine my happiness when I learned I could now order their pastries and have them delivered to my doorstep!  Since I was in full-on donut craving mode, I immediately went to their website to determine if I could order their non-allergenic and non-dairy (but full-delicious) donuts.  Lo and behold, minutes later I was typing in my credit card number to pay for the semi-epic order I placed which included six cinnamon sugar donuts, six apple cinnamon muffins, a magic bar, brownie, and piece of fruit crumble cake.  Let’s just say I went a tad overboard. . .

Just two days ago, my goodies arrived!

I was eager to see exactly what was inside. . .

I haven’t had one of the baked goods yet, but I soon will, and I promise to report back on just how fantastic they are.  Operation “Get-A-Donut” turned out to be a whopping success, and honestly I cannot wait to try all of these fun new foodie items that now sit in my freezer!  By the way, the bakery even sends you a little note explaining steps for freezing their products so they stay fresh for a long time!

Are you a donut fan?  What’s your favorite kind?
