Ever since we moved, I simply have not wanted to be in the kitchen. Part of that is that my kitchen is so nice and clean and new-feeling that I just don’t want to dirty it by cooking! I am trying to preserve that “new house” feeling for as long as possible– in fact, my husband commented yesterday that he still feels like he is living in a hotel, and to be honest, I feel the same way!. As a result, my food choices have been all over the place– the majority of what I have been eating this past few weeks is not prepared by me at home. I have sort of just let myself eat exactly what I want, when I want it, and you know what– I love this philosophy! I have never been much of an intuitive eater, but because I don’t feel like thinking about food until I am hungry, I have fallen into an intuitive-eating pattern. I have to say, it’s absolutely wonderful– for the first time in a long time, I feel like I am trusting my body to just tell me what it wants when it wants, regardless of how “healthy” the food is considered.
Some awesome side effects of this recent “intuitive” type of eating is that I find myself overeating a lot less. In other words, I am way more content just eating what I want and stopping when I am full without having the feeling of wanting more. Also, I have been craving sweets less! I used to indulge in a monster desserts on weekends, but lately, I haven’t had the desire to go dessert-crazy. My digestion has been better than ever too, perhaps because I have actually reduced my fiber intake. That may sound against what seems to be standard advice, but I had abdominal pain a while ago that may have been caused by too much fiber according to my doc. Some of the downsides of this style of eating is my consumption of vegetables has gone way done. They just haven’t appealed to me much, at least in large quantities. I assume that’ll change though if I just continue to truly listen to what I want. Here are some of the meals I have enjoyed lately that are not your usual “Ami” meals!
I’ve been obsessed with plain butter croissants for breakfast lately!
Yesterday I enjoyed a blueberry muffin to start my day.
When my bro was in town, we had bagels from our favorite bagel shop for breakfast– blueberry for me with light cream cheese on the side!
One day, I was on the road running errands in the afternoon and I all of a sudden got super hungry. On the way home, I stopped at Subway and got a six-inch veggie sandwich with cheese on wheat and a side of baked Lay’s. It hit the spot!
My husband and I have been enjoying dinners on our new outdoor patio. On Monday, I craved, and therefore ate, a lovely spinach pie from a local bakery.
I actually did make exactly one meal in my kitchen so far, also in response to a craving. I boiled up some whole wheat spaghetti (ok, that’s not really cooking!) and devoured it topped with marinara sauce and served with boiled broccoli on the side.
When school starts up in a few weeks, I’ll have to plan more in regards to what I will be eating but until then, I am going to continue to enjoy this go-with-the-flow mentality towards food!
