I know a lot of bloggers have been producing all kinds of gift guides, so I figured I would throw in my two cents too! Thinking back on my pregnancy, I am surprised at how few “pregnancy-specific” products I have in fact used so far; however, there are a few things that have really helped get me through the tough parts of pregnancy. Here’s a few gift ideas I think any momma-to-be would love to have (if they don’t already!).
About four or five months into pregnancy, I started to have trouble getting comfortable in bed. My hips hurt, and the only position that felt good was flat on my back, which of course is not recommended during the later months of pregnancy. One night, I remember tossing and turning at least fifty times and both my husband and I agreed something needed to be done. After doing some research, I found the Snoogle on Amazon. Based on the numerous positive reviews, we decided to order it, even though it did look sort of huge and cumbersome. After just one night with the Snoogle though, I was convinced– it has been the answer to my pregnancy sleep problems! I love the support it provides for both my back and hips, and it enables me to avoid sleeping too much on my back. Yes, it takes up half of the bed, but when I get out of bed about thirty minutes before my husband does, he ends up stealing it for himself! I would definitely recommend this pillow for every pregnant lady!
Early on in my pregnancy, I was tempted many times to purchase specialty products for my skin– particularly lotions or oils for my belly to avoid stretch marks. However, I kept putting it off, mostly because I decided I would rather spend money on my baby instead of myself. Well my amazing sister-in-law Jill, who I swear can read my mind all the way from California, sent me a surprise gift that happened to be this all natural gift set full of products for soon-to be mom’s skin. It came at exactly the right time, when my belly was itchy beyond belief! I used the body wash, body butter and stretch oil immediately, and loved them all! I spritz the happy mama spray whenever I need a boost! The only thing I didn’t use myself was the morning wellness tea because I was beyond feeling morning sickness when I got the gift, but I have kept them handy for if I ever do feel some nausea! This is the kind of gift that makes you just feel special and deserving of care, and it is just the right size for you to test out the products to make sure you like them!
I have watched every episode of Bravo’s reality tv show Rosie Pope, Maternity Concierge, which featured pregnancy guru Rosie Pope helping expectant parents solve some of their maternity and pregnancy crises. I loved the show, so of course when my sister-in-law Jill sent me Rosie’s book when she found out I was pregnant, I was ecstatic! It’s the perfect light read for someone just entering the beginning stages of pregnancy, and especially for someone who watched her show religiously. I still consult the book about once a week!
This was a book I downloaded myself when I found out I was pregnant. It’s a funny, honest and light look at the changes that occur during pregnancy, and it definitely helps you feel better about some of the weird things that happen to your body when you are baking a baby!
5. A gift certificate for a prenatal massage
I don’t think an explanation is needed for this one! Let’s just say it is the ultimate indulgence for an achy, creaky pregnant lady!
6. A foodie gift that satisfies a pregnant woman’s craving
I remember, right around when I was three months pregnant, I wrote on my blog how I was craving a specific piece of strawberry shortcake from a bakery about thirty minutes from my home. I commented how I was too lazy to go get it myself, but would love to have a slice! Well, lo and behold, my wonderful mother-in-law came to visit my husband and I the next weekend, and when she presented me the exact piece of cake I wanted, it was like all of my dreams had come true! While I haven’t had too many pregnancy cravings, when I do have them, they are strong, and having them satisfied is perhaps the best thing ever, especially when it is something that’s hard to find!
7. Paying for a housecleaner
One of the best gifts I have given myself is hiring a house cleaner to come every other week. When we moved into my new home, I was experiencing a ton of back and joint pain. My home has four usable floors, so the thought of cleaning it on my own sounded painful to say the least. Based on a recommendation, we decided to test out the waters of hiring a housecleaner on a bi-monthly basis. Honestly, it is the best money I have spent! For a very reasonable fee, I don’t have to scrub, vacuum, mop, dust or anything except occasionally wipe down a few surfaces over the course of the week! My preggo body literally thanks myself for this indulgence. Honestly, the cost does boil down to not buying one fancy coffee drink everyday, which is a cost and sacrifice that to me is worth it.
I have heard mixed reviews regarding maternity bands. Some friends of mine swear that they extended their life of their regular pants by months, while others say they don’t prevent pants from falling down. I decided to buy a few of these BeBands from Target (cheaper than the ones at Destination Maternity) to see if I could get away with wearing some of my pants unbuttoned. I found that these bands worked really well, and I currently can wear my pre-pregnancy pants quite comfortably, with no fear of them falling down. I hightly recommend them because they can save you some serious money down the line on maternity clothes!
9. Gift Certificate to a favorite restaurant
Let’s be honest, once the baby comes, date nights may come to a halt for a bit. My husband and I have been trying to visit our favorite restaurants now, while we can! Getting a gift certificate to mama-to-be’s favorite restaurant is a really nice way to encourage her to relax and indulge. Believe me when I say all I want to spend my money on is my baby, and sometimes I feel guilty spending money on myself. However, a gift certificate gives my husband and I an excuse to indulge ourselves on some of our favorite things.
There are so many things that people have helped me with since becoming pregnant. A friend of mine, Dana, spent a whole evening with me helping me figure out what to register for since she had just gone through the overwhelming process a few months before. Another friend of mine at work lets me pick her brain every morning when I ask her whatever newborn infant questions that pop into my head at that particular time. When it comes time to assemble our strollers, pack n play, and other things I have yet to take out of the box, my sister plans on coming over to help me figure it all out. An interior designer friend of ours is coming over next weekend to help us figure out our storage situation in the nursery, plus is taking us rug shopping for the rest of the house. In other words, all of these folks are volunteering their time to help us first-time clueless parents-to-be out, and their gifts of time are perhaps the most valuable gifts of all! So if you could offer a pregnant friend some of your time or talents, I think it would be one of the best gifts she may ever get, believe me!
